Car park, Crowe Corporation

The cool night air hit Tom and Sam like a welcome blast of freedom. The alarm was screaming again from the black glass building behind them and they heard the heavy stamping of boots and shouting at their back. But Michael was waiting at the far edge of the car park in Maya’s car, chewing his finger nails off at the time the two were taking. As soon as he saw them he screeched up beside them, barely stopping to make sure they were safely on board before swerving off at high speed towards the M4, revving the engine as if it was his bike – and wishing it were. Sam and Tom were bundled together, all arms and legs, on the back seat.

For a moment there was a stunned silence in the car.

‘Blimey,’ Sam’s previous confidence drained suddenly away.

‘Christ, man, you were awesome in there,’ Tom smacked his friend hard on the back in appreciation. He filled Michael in about what had happened. ‘If it wasn’t for this guy, we’d both be dead by now I reckon. That Flint’s mean as shit, he’d take no prisoners.’

‘At least we got the stuff we needed,’ Sam muttered modestly. ‘Let me know what you find out when you’ve broken the encryption.’

‘It’s encrypted?’ Michael asked.

‘Yeah, but we’d expected that. Very Crowe,’ Tom said.

‘Drop me at the turning to the airport can you,’ Sam shot an anxious glance out of the back window. ‘Terminal One.’

‘But it’ll be closed at this time of night,’ Tom pointed out.

‘I’ll be OK. It’s already after two. Anyway, I’m not risking missing that 7 a.m. plane.’

‘Listen, thanks,’ Tom told his friend. ‘We could’ve got killed in there, and you didn’t need to take that risk.’

Sam just shook his head. ‘I want to know as much as you do. Keep in touch.’ He leapt out of the car as Michael pulled to a stop on the hard shoulder, grabbing the bag he’d left in the boot before disappearing up the grass verge and out of sight.

‘I’ll miss him,’ Tom said. ‘He’s an amazing guy.’

Michael said nothing, driving west along the M4 and back towards London and Maya’s flat.

Crowe Corporation, security office, west London

Brandon, still immaculate in a sharply tailored dinner jacket and black tie despite the hour, stood rigid with fury in front of Darren Flint and his two muscle boys.

‘How? How exactly did this man calmly stroll into my office, access my computer, then walk out of this building, right in front of your bloody useless noses, and you don’t have a fucking clue where he is now?’

Flint had obviously decided to tough it out, because he thrust his considerable chest out and crossed his arms in silent defiance at his boss’s attack.

‘What the fuck do we have security cameras for? Why wasn’t he picked up at once?’ He glared at Flint. ‘Who the fuck is he anyway? Do you know him?’

‘It was Sam Lane, Mr Crowe, sir. He’s an employee. How was I to know he was lying? He’s a good guy, Sam.
